Double R Aussiedoodles Home Page
What the heck is an Aussiedoodle and why would anyone want one?

Good question and here’s what they are and how it all started.  A few  years ago a very good friend asked me to go on the internet and research the Labradoodle breed…he thought perhaps I’d never heard of them.  Well, I had heard of them, had never seen one, but I let my computer do the searching and gave him a report on what I had discovered.  It was then that the idea planted itself in my brain and started to take root.

Double R Aussies was already a very well established breeding program for Miniature Australian Shepherds.  We had determined to breed the best Aussies available.  We did all our testing before we bred any of our dogs.  We know DJD, or hip dysplasia, is a problem in all breeds of dogs, even miniatures.  So we began to Penn HIP all our breeding stock dogs.   We all know that there is nothing more heartbreaking then having our beloved pets end up crippled or disabled, as they age, from hip dysplasia.  Our goal was to prevent the problem of DJD if at all possible.  The best way we knew how to do that was to start out with dogs that did not have DJD to begin with. By doing Penn HIP testing on our breeding dogs we selected only those dogs who scored high enough to be considered worthy for breeding.  We also CERF tested all our breeding stock dogs to help prevent any genetic eye problems.  All of this testing is expensive, but we feel it's so worth it in the long run.  Our motto is to treat others the way we want to be treated...we would want to buy a dog from someone who cared enough to have their dogs tested before breeding.  So that is what we decided to do here at Double R Aussies...we have carried this same policy into the breeding of our Aussiedoodles.

The idea of crossing a Miniature Australian Shepherd and a Poodle started out as a joke...just talk, a way to build a better, non shedding version, of our Mini Aussies!  My breeder friends and I would laugh about mixing the two breeds…what would we call them?  Well, the idea just didn’t go away, it stayed and grew until I finally had to do something about it…just to see what I could develop!

The reason behind crossing the Aussies and the Poodles was exactly this, most of my puppy buyers absolutely love their beautiful herding dogs, but many of them hate the shedding that goes along with the dog.  The shedding can be a problem for some folks, especially those people with allergies…my thinking was by crossing the breeds we can get a dog that looks like the Aussie with those distinct beautiful colors, those blue eyes, and that wonderful intelligent brain, mixed with the Poodle, that are also VERY smart, have similar features, conformation, and a non shedding quality about their hair coat…the BEST of both worlds!  Well, that was the idea behind this project.

Here at the Double R we figure to improve the strong points of both breeds.  We have developed a hybrid dog that has the beautiful colors of the Australian Shepherds and the Parti Poodles, above average intelligence, gorgeous looks, a dog that  comes in all sizes from toy, to miniatures, to standards!  After 5 years of selective breeding we have arrived...we have dogs of all sizes and colors in our breeding program. I am amazed at how many of our buyers want a larger size Aussiedoodle.  In the beginning I was thinking small, lap size dogs.  The demand has been huge for dogs from 25 to 40 pounds and up!

We are now several years into this project.  I can honestly say breeding Aussiedoodles is a huge SUCCESS!  Today we produce more Aussiedoodles then we do miniature Australian Shepherds.  Who would have thought Aussiedoodles would take off in such a big way?  They are even registered!  We use the American Canine Hybrid Club, which is a sister club to APRI, America's Pet Registry, Inc.  The people are ACHC are wonderful to work with.  While we refer to our hybrid cross as an Aussiedoodle they prefer to register them as Aussie-Poos...the name is not the important issue..same wonderful, low to non shedding dog whatever we call them!

As always our  goal is to produce a top quality dog.  One  that looks like an Australian Shepherd with a poodle type hair coat that is low to non shedding. The first cross of our purebred dogs is called an F1, meaning it's 50% Aussie, and 50% Poodle.  The second generation is called an F1b.  We always go back to the Poodle for this second cross which is now ¾ Poodle and ¼ Aussie. In the fall of 2009 we will be ready to breed an F1 to an F1b giving us a truly new breed…a purebred Aussiedoodle called a multigen or our 3ed generation.

If you want a really cute dog, have any allergy problems, do not want the mess of a shedding type dog, be the first in your neighborhood to own a gorgeous Double R Aussiedoodle!
